Nicotinamide or niacinamide has originally been used in the medical sector, from where its old name Vitamin B3 originates. It is a durable, water-soluble vitamin, and a sought-after substance in the cosmetic industry today. Niacinamide can be used for various problems. Basically, it stimulates the synthesis of cholesterol and ceramides in the cells of the epidermis. Cholesterol and ceramides are essential components of the human cell membrane and its barrier structures. Thus, the moisturizing level of the skin is improved, and the skin looks firmer. Concentration should be between 1 and 2%. A specific area of use are anti-aging-products. Niacinamide improves the overall appearance of the skin. The synthesis mentioned above makes the skin look younger and less wrinkled. Concentration should be up to 5%. Skin suffering from acne, inflamed spots and pimples as well as skin suffering from inflamed skin due to atopic eczema can also benefit from niacinamide; it may reduce inflammation and regulate sebum production. Concentration should be between 2 and 4 % A selective local treatment of the inflamed areas is recommended. Niacinamide reduces sebum production and should not be used on dry skin.
