The antioxidant for your skin! Ascorbyl palmitate is obtained by esterification of ascorbic acid with palmitic acid. It is an anti-oxidant and emulsifier, and a harmless food additive (E304). In contrast to pure ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate is soluble in fat (and alcohol). It is much more stable, as it is much less oxygen-sensitive. It is heat-stable and can be melted in the oily phase. Ascorbyl palmitate can permeate deeply into the outer skin layers. It is especially beneficial for damaged and impure skin. Its regenerating properties help improve the skin texture. On the whole, it supports the synthesis of collagen and ceramide, and thus prevents skin-ageing processes. As it combines the fat loving palmitic acid and water loving ascorbic acid, it has slightly emulsifying properties, too. Combined with its consistency enhancing properties, this makes it a fine stabilizing component in emulsions. It is recommended to combine ascorbyl palmitate with vitamin E (tocopherol), as both substances complement each other.
