Cistus is a family of small bushy shrubs, which grow mainly in the Mediterranean maquis, in a dry and sunny habitat. They have been used as culinary and medicinal herbs and in perfumery since ancient times. Cistus offer a high content in polyphenoles, plus resin, borneol, cineol, ledol, limonen and phenol. Cistus yields essential oils; depending on the extraction method, this may be a volatile oil or a resin (Labdanum). Our cistus hydrosol has the tangy, aromatic scent of flowering maquis in the summer sun. Medics in antique Greece used cistus for its antibacterial and fungicide properties. Today, we can use cistus hydrosol as a facial tonic or as aqueous phase in creams for acne, atopic dermatitis, and skin impurities. It is also an effective ingredient in mouthwashes. Since cistus is said to have a disinfectant effect, people with strong perspiration should try cistus hydrosol as a basis for a home-made deodorant.
