Co-emulsifier and consistency enhancer Cetyl alcohol is plant-based. It is produced from virgin fats and oils. Methyl esters or free fatty acids plus hydrogen are turned into fat alcohols and are being cleaned (high pressure hydrogenation). Cetyl alcohol is used as a co-emulsifier and consistency enhancer in creams and lotions. It makes rather firm emulsions that can nevertheless be spread easily on the skin.
