Its root is called orris root and has been used since ancient times for healing and cosmetic purposes (powder, peeling), and also as a cherished ingredient in beverages like Benedictine and Danziger Goldwasser. In perfumery and soapmaking it acts as a fixative, especially for volatile citrus notes. In powders, it is used for its own lovely scent, and also as a fixative for essential oils.
