The alcanna plant (Alkanna tinctoria) is a blue-flowered rough-leaf plant from warm regions (South and Southwest Europe, North Africa). Since ancient times it has been used as a dyeing plant for natural fabrics, e.g. wool and silk, wood or leather, but also as a make-up plant. The dye alkannin occurs mainly in the bark / root bark. Small amounts of alkannan and red pigments are also found. Oil or alcohol is used to dissolve the dyes. In an "oily environment" a deep red colour is produced, in a basic environment the colour changes to violet. If alkanna is used in soap boiling, this process can be easily observed. The soap paste or the fresh soap looks violet to greyish. During maturation, the colour changes to blue to reddish violet.
