The marula tree is a tree from the arid regions of Southern Africa. Just a little rain lets it flower and produce masses of fruit. The marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) grows up to 15 m height and belongs to the sumac family. Many cultivated plants in the subtropical and arid regions of the world belong to this family (mango, Chinese lacquer tree, pistachio). The fruit have the size of mirabelles, and contain two seeds. These seeds yield an oil that has been used by the natives since ancient times. It is not only used for cooking, but also for skin and hair care. Some ethnic groups even use it for ritual purposes. Marula oil has a high content of oleic acid; thus, it is an oil that is easily absorbed and nourishing. Supported by the content of stearic acid and palmitic acid, it protects the skin from losing too much moisture. This oil is well suited for dry and chapped skin, and for hair care. If used undiluted, the oil will instantly make the skin soft and smooth - an excellent massage oil. It has practically no inherent odor and is a good base oil for fragrance blends of essential oils or perfume oils. One special feature of marula oil is its oxidation stability attributed to its high content of tocopherole (vitamin E) and vitamin C. Presumably, more anti-oxidative components are present, but are yet to be identified. There is evidence, however, that adding marula oil to an oil blend improves shelf life substantially.
