The pyrrolizidine-free seeds of borage are carefully pressed for this oil, which is then refined. Borage oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially in gamma linolenic acid (GLA), of which it contains over 20 %. For cosmetic uses, these GLA are the most important components. Unsaturated fatty acids are essential for the body. If they are lacking, skin will be dry, rough, cracked, and dehydrated. Unsaturated fatty acids regulate the moisture content of the skin and can alleviate these symptoms. Even small amounts of borage oil can improve symptoms of atopic eczema and psoriasis, and can regenerate ageing skin. The skin?s elasticity is improved, thus the skin looks younger. Borage oil can be added to the oily phase of all emulsions. It makes a nice lipid-replenishing component in shower gels.
