Sorbitol is a sugar substitute that is also used in cosmetics Sorbitol is an alcohol. The white, crystalline powder has appr. 60% of the sweetening power of sugar and is slightly hygroscopic. The powder is easily dissolved in water and heat-proof, and is thus suited for cooking and baking. It is added to baking goods because of its hygroscopic properties. You can easily make sorbitol syrup: mix 7 parts of sorbitol with 3 parts of water. The syrup has a shelf life of at least six months. You can use it as a liquid sweetener, as a basic ingredient for home made beverages containing tea, herb extracts, fruit juices and food colorings. Daily intake should not exceed 30 to 60 g. Sorbitol is suited for diabetics. Caloric value: 240 kcal, 12 g = 1 BE In cosmetics, sorbitol is used for sweetening toothpaste, or as a hygroscopic agent in emulsions, as a substitute for glycerol or propanediol.
