Animal fats can also be saponified! Lard is made by "rendering" pork fat. In the process, the bacon is crushed and then heated. The lard comes out and can be skimmed off or filtered; what remains are the so-called greaves. This animal fat is very similar to human skin fat, which is why it was used early on to make ointments. In soap production, lard yields white, creamy foaming soaps with a pleasantly smooth, firm feel. As with other fats, the initially light soaps darken to a yellowish colour. Since lard has a slight odour of its own, no more than 25 % should be contained in a fat mixture.
