In Reggio di Calabria, special citrus trees are growing. They are slightly smaller than lemon and orange trees and carry golden yellow fruit. These fruit are inedible; they taste tart and bitter. But their peel contains the precious essential oil known as bergamot oil. Bergamot oil is certainly one of the best-known essential oils. It became famous through Earl Grey tea, to which it lends the dry citrus-aroma. And it is an important component of the "Eau de Cologne", in which it is blended with other citrus fruit oils, orange flower oil and herbs like rosemary and lavender. The light, fresh and green scent brightens up the day and makes the sun rise! Bergamot essential oil contains furocoumarins and can be phototoxic. It should not be applied to the skin before sun exposure. Do not use for scenting soap - this fine scent will not survive the saponifying process. Botanical name: Citrus x limon, Syn.
