The wood of the Amyris tree contains a lot of essential oil; in old times it has been used as torches. As the second name suggests, West Indian sandalwood oil is widely used as a substitute for the far more expensive true Indian sandalwood. Its scent is quite similar, but not as soft and considerably dryer. The strong, woody note is most suitable for scenting soaps. In natural perfumes, amyris harmonizes with soft notes like benzoe, vanilla and labdanum, in men?s fragrances with spicy and herbal notes.
