Oak moss is a lichen growing mainly on oaks (as the name suggests). When fresh, it has no scent whatsoever. It develops its deep scent of damp woods and leaf mould after drying. Oak moss is used in classic perfumery in Chypre and Fougère notes. It is a good fixative in natural perfumes, to which it lends a tart, dry, slightly smoky character. Use sparingly! Too much oak moss can spoil a fragrance.
