Cistus is an evergreen, sun-loving shrub native to the Mediterranean. The resin smells warm and intensely balsamic and has been a much sought-after ingredient for fragrances since the ancient days. Up until today it is used as a fixative in high-class perfumery. The essential oil distilled from the leaves is slightly lighter and more herbal than the essential oil distilled from the resin that is being sold as labdanum oil. Use this precious essential oil with care; in too high a concentration it can easily dominate a fragrance blend.
