The root of Angelica archangelica has strong healing properties and a characteristic, fresh, green and spicy scent. It is an ingredient in many famous cordials like Chartreuse and Benedictine. Its candied stems can be used for decorating cakes and sweets. There is even a snuff tobacco flavored with angelica! Angelica is one of the "Amara aromatica", the aromatic bitter substances that "let the juices flow" - it aids digestion and metabolism. The warming essential oil is often used in balms and rubs against the common cold. It should always be used with caution; if not diluted adequately, it can irritate sensitive skin if exposed to the sun. One should avoid using it before sunbathing. If used carefully, it is a wonderful ingredient in natural perfumes - some of the substances it contains act like pheromones!
