Calamus, also known as sweet flag, has a rhizome that looks very much like the ginger rhizome; in Germany, it is also known as "German ginger". It grows at boggy sites. It originates in Asia, but has spread throughout the Northern hemisphere. This plant has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine since ancient times; it is said to aid longevity. The essential oil distilled from the rhizomes is used for gargling mixtures against gum and throat infections. Moreover, it is a valued ingredient in dry fond notes in classic perfumery.
